RED SOX : News & Notes
November 18,2013.

~ Daniel Bard's Troubles: Daniel Bard continues to have struggles, this time pitching in Puerto Rico.On Saturday Bard appears to have hit 'rock bottom'.In the seventh inning he walked his first two batters then threw a 'wild pitch'.He then walked a third to load the bases. Two runs then came in on a pair of 'wild pitches'setting up two more walks to end Bard's night.Bard has not yet pitched for the Cubs after being claimed of waivers Sept.4th.

~ Bryce Harper - Arbitration bound in 2015 ?:  There is a previously unreported aspect of Bryce Harper's contract. When he was selected number one in the 2010 draft,Harper reached a 'Oral Agreement' with the Nationals less than a minute before the midnight deadline on Aug.16th.At the time the Nationals were adamant that the contract not contain a clause to allow Harper to opt out of the contract terms and into the arbitration process when he was eligible.Scott Boras,Harper's agent insisted that the standard opt-out clause be included. When the contract arrived from the Nationals it did not contain the opt-out clause.Harper and Boras refused to sign it.MLB and the players association stepped in and a compromise was reached - A letter of agreement saying that if Harper qualified for salary arbitration before he reached the end of the contract,a grievance hearing would determine whether he could opt-out of his contract.Following next season Harper should be eligible for arbitration early as a 'Super Two' player.Harper is scheduled to make $ 1.5 million in 2015 under the original contract. An arbitration hearing could change that to between $ 4 million and $ 7 million.

~ Alex Rodriguez to begin making case: Alex Rodriguez will have his chance today to tell his side of the story.Rodriguez will be in New York to finally attend the arbitration hearing into his 211 game suspension. He will have a uphill battle.MLB has the testimony of his drug dealer,e-mails,phone records and text messages. On A-Rod's side is the fact that MLB does not actually have a 'positive'drug test. Also there is contention that MLB was too aggressive in the way it investigated the matter.Rodriguez's legal team appears to be fighting back in the media by discrediting MLB's investigation.
