MICHAEL WEINER 'PASSES' 15 MONTHS AFTER DIAGNOSIS OF BRAIN TUMOR

OBITUARY

Michael Weiner the head of the MLBPA died yesterday after a 15 month battle with brain cancer.

Weiner died at his home in Mansfield Township,N.J. He was 51 years old.

During his career with the MLBPA he orchestrated the longest period of labor peace in history. There has not been a work stoppage in eighteen years. 

Former player Tony Clark said in a statement,"Words cannot describe the love and affection that the players have for Michael,nor can they describe the level of sadness we felt today.Not only has the game lost one of its most important and influential leaders in this generation,all involved in the game have lost a true friend."

Clark will take over as acting executive director and should be approved as Weiner's successor next month. 

Despite his illness,Weiner insisted on working to the end. "He's a lot braver than I am," said Mets third baseman David Wright during the All-Star break as Weiner worked throughout the festivities in July.

Commissioner Selig said,"This relationship has been a great benefit to baseball,and it has led to the tremendous success the game now enjoys."

Michael Weiner is survived by his wife Diane Margolin and his three grown daughters,Margie,Grace and Sally.
