DAY 2 ~ WINTER MEETINGS 'IN BRIEF'

Here are some notes from Day 2 of the Baseball Winter Meetings:

~ Ben Cherington informs us that most of his trade talks involve 'bench players'. If a trade is made it will probably involve 'the bench' as opposed to the 'big' trade.

~ The Red Sox have a surplus of starting pitching, but Ben Cherington likes to have that depth, "Every time we think about potentially moving a starter, something in the back of our head reminds us, don't do it unless it really makes sense. We know were going to need more than five starters to get through the season, probably need more than six starters to get through the season." Cherington added that the young starters would get their chances over the season despite the Red Sox pitching depth.

~  The Red Sox have not had any recent conversations with Scott Boras about Stephen Drew. Ben Cherington hopes to speak to him before the winter meetings end. The Red Sox would like to keep Drew if the terms are right.

~ Ben Cherington said that a extension for Jon Lester is on his agenda. "He's a key guy, obviously. He's been a horse for us for a long time. He didn't show any signs of slowing down in October. Obviously he's a guy we'd like to keep. We'll see, there's certainly a willingness to have a conversation and we'll see where that goes. But we haven't done that yet."

~ Rumor has it former Red Sox prospect Brandon Jacobs is the player to be named later in the Mark Trumbo trade made yesterday. Jacobs would go from the White Sox to Arizona, if he is not selected in the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday.

~ Yankees manager Joe Girardi on Jacoby Ellsbury, "I think we've acquired a great player. We've seen the damage he can do against us. We first-hand witnessed that how he can change a game." Ellsbury will be introduced in New York on Friday.
