RED SOX : NEWS & NOTES
March 27,2014.

JOHN HENRY ON JERRY REMY: ‘ALL OF US IN RED SOX NATION STAND BEHIND HIM’ : Red Sox owner John Henry voiced his support for NESN analyst Jerry Remy, two days after a Boston Globe report painted a picture of Remy as an enabling father of an oft-troubled son who now stands charged with murder.
“I’ve told him, all of us in Red Sox Nation stand behind him,” Henry told WCVB-TV on Tuesday. “It’s a terrible thing he’s been going through, but we’re really glad to have him back.”
Remy has been broadcasting Red Sox games for NESN at spring training, but he returned to Boston this week in order to participate in negotiations regarding custody of his 5-year-old granddaughter. Jared Remy stands accused of killing the girl’s mother, Jennifer Martel, at the Waltham apartment they shared. He has pleaded not guilty and will go on trial in the fall. The Martel and Remy families came to an agreement Tuesday that gives the Martels custody but allows the Remys visitation rights.

~Brown to stay : Outfielder Corey Brown did not opt out of his contract and will play for Triple A Pawtucket.

~Final 'cuts' today ( Center Field on Friday ) : The Sox will make the majority of their cuts on Thursday. But Farrell said the decision between Jackie Bradley Jr. and Grady Sizemore will go into Friday.
Farrell said that in his opinion, Bradley is one of the best defensive outfielders in the game in terms of getting a jump on the ball.

GOMES ~ 'Stars & Stripes'
~'Yankee Doodle Dandy' ! : Jonny Gomes purchased stars and stripes sport coats for all his teammates and gave them out today.
(No, the Red Sox will not be wearing them to the White House).
A few of the players tried them on and looked like the Ryder Cup team for a while. David Ortiz's was too big but he walked around with it on. Big Papi looked a little like Apollo Creed. The company that makes the product, Loudmouth Golf, offered Gomes one for free. But he worked a group deal.

~Farrell 'Not concerned' about Ortiz : David Ortiz is not in the lineup for this afternoon's game against the Orioles. He will spend extra time in the cage with hitting coaches Greg Colbrunn and Victor Rodriguez. Ortiz is 2 for 35 this spring with 12 strikeouts.
Manager John Farrell says he's not worried, pointing out that Ortiz didn't play in spring training at all last season before going 4 for 18 in six games with Triple A Pawtucket. Ortiz then hit .500/.513/.917 in April with 15 RBIs in nine games."Not concerned at all," Farrell said.

~Others 'Tune-up' : The crowd of about 30 people who watched Red Sox ace Jon Lester pitch a minor league game on a wind-swept practice field on Wednesday afternoon included his wife, Farrah, and two young sons along with teammates Clay Buchholz and Jake Peavy."It's harder when you don't have a stadium and the crowd," said Lester, who threw 94 pitches over six innings in his final game of spring training. "Biggest thing is [staying] healthy."The Red Sox were playing the Baltimore Orioles at JetBlue Park off in the distance, the same team Lester will face on Opening Day this Monday. So the decision was made to have the lefthander pitch for Single A Salem against the Fort Myers Twins of the Florida State League. He allowed one run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Chris Capuano pitched five innings for Single A Greenville and was close to perfect. He didn't allow a hit, walked two and struck out 10.Daniel Nava played center field for six innings for Triple A Pawtucket in a game at the Minnesota complex. He was 3 for 6 with a home run and four RBIs. He took four at-bats righthanded and two lefthanded. David Ross caught Lester and was 3 for 6 in the game with a double.

~Victorino has played in only 8 games : Shane Victorino (left side) would be playing if today were a regular season game, Farrell said. But the Sox are being careful."He was cleared to play today. But I felt like where we are in camp, another day, just precautionary, is where we're at," Farrell said.Victorino is expected to play on Thursday, but that could be in a minor league game so the Red Sox could retain the ability to backdate a stay on the disabled list.Victorino has played in only eight games his spring because of injuries. But Farrell is pushing on with him."He's going to be our right fielder on Opening Day, I can tell you that," he said.

JON LESTER
~ Lester's contract talks going well : Red Sox ace Jon Lester is pleased with the state of his contract negotiations with theclub.
"Like [general manager] Ben [Cherington] said the other day, both sides are optimistic about it," said Lester. "And the biggest thing is that really anytime you're talking about something like this, the biggest thing is communication. But as long as both ends are open and we're communicating, there's always that chance of something getting done."Though Cherington said earlier this week he'd like to have the situation resolved by Opening Day on Monday, Lester doesn't think that date is a be-all, end-all, considering the generally pleasant nature of the talks."Like I said last week, I think if we're close, both sides have agreed we're not just going to end something just to end something because it's Opening Day," said Lester. "If we're close, yeah, we'll carry it over. I don't think that's a distraction. But I feel like if things are nowhere near being done, yeah, that's a good thing for both sides. You can come out and say what needs to be said about it and put it on the back burner and worry about playing baseball then."All along, Lester has made it clear that he'd much rather stay with the Red Sox for the rest of his career than test free agency at the end of the 2014 season, even if it means sacrificing a few dollars on the open market.Asked about reports that Max Scherzer recently turned down a substantial extension with the Tigers, Lester's response was somewhat telling in terms of where his mind is at."I mean that stuff is hard to comment on because you don't know. I'm not him. I don't ever want to talk bad upon anybody. That's his decision. I'm not going to bad mouth anybody," said Lester. "They have their own beliefs, their own mindset, their own representation, and so I mean, personally, if that's me, that's hard to walk away from. But he's betting on himself. Maybe he really deep down wants to be a free agent."We don't get to do it very often. Maybe that's his ultimate thing, he wants to do it, I don't know. I don't know him. I've never spoken to the guy so I can't really comment on that. But as far as personally, that would be hard."Lester had his final tuneup on Wednesday in advance of his start on Opening Day, firing six innings in a Minor League game.
