RED SOX : NEWS & NOTES
March 10,2014.

~Lester to start..others lined-up : Jon Lester starts his first spring training game today. The all-but-official Opening Day starter will face the Rays at 1:05 p.m.The Sox started Clay Buchholz on Sunday. Lester, John Lackey, Felix Doubront (in a minor league game) and Jake Peavy will follow. For the first time all spring, the Sox have their five starters lined up.Does that mean it will be Lester, Lackey and Doubront out of the gate? It very well could. Doubront has pitched well this spring and deserves to be there. The Sox also seem likely to give Peavy extra time to get ready given his assorted odd injuries this spring.Buchholz is not the expected No. 5 starter. But how the Sox line up the first time is not as important as how each individual pitcher is prepared. The Sox need to find a way to keep Buchholz healthy and easing him into the season could be part of the plan.

~Rich Hill starts work : Lefthanded reliever Rich Hill threw 36 pitches in the bullpen this morning with pitching coach Juan Nieves watching."Felt great," said Hill, who arrived in camp on Thursday. "It was good to get on the mound."Hill said he will pitch in an intrasquad game on Wednesday and from there should be set to get into a regular game. He is in camp on a minor league contract.

~More starters on the way : Shane Victorino had one more day of workouts and how he came out of that will determine whether he will get back into the lineup either today or Tuesday. Victorino has not participated in game action yet, taking it slow after thumb surgery this offseason.Grady Sizemore will see his first back-to-back action Monday and Tuesday."We've had a number of guys who have shown very well in camp, individual performances are the things that stand out, yet personally we have yet to get our team together. We've had the majority of our team together on home games, but when we start to go in this next turn in the rotation and get our starters in sync with everyday players as we saw with Felix (Doubront) on the mound the other day, there's a more consistent flow to the game. We play a much cleaner game in those situations," said Farrell, who endured his team's eight-error performance in Saturday's doubleheader.
