FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Just another three-inning, no-hits-allowed outing for Chris Capuano.

After last Thursday's performance against the New York Yankees, Capuano, who didn't sign with the Red Sox until late February, has thrown back-to-back three-inning appearances in which he hasn't allowed a hit. In 11 innings this spring, he's allowed just three runs on seven hits.

"He continues to throw the ball very well," manager John Farrell said. "He uses all of his pitches. He’s not afraid to throw in on right-handers with his fastball. He’s got a good mix to throttle some hitters back and forth with fastballs and changeups. He continues to make quality pitches. He’s been very good.”

The 35-year-old left-hander has impressed, particularly with how ready he came into camp.

"Probably the biggest thing is the shape he keeps himself in," Farrell said. "It was apparent he had thrown a number of bullpens prior to signing with us. And to have the command that he’s shown, that’s as impressive as anything we’ve seen with him. The assortment with pitches, the execution of them, reading swings and the pitch selection has been very good. He’s been a very good addition."

Capuano will continue to stretch out as a starter this spring, though he's likely to be used as a multiple-inning reliever when the season begins. All five starters out of the rotation are expected to be healthy.

"We want to be sure that we get enough repetition, enough pitches thrown, in the event that he’s got a spot start," Farrell said.
